This week our in-depth look is at Black Pepper. Black pepper is an integral part of the TurmeriX® blend.

So… What is Black Pepper?

Black pepper (piper nigrum) is a perennial woody vine of the Piperacae family. The fruits, called peppercorns are drupes! Black, green and white peppercorns are all the same; their colour difference comes from the different stages of development and processing methods. Black peppercorns are made by picking the fruits when they are half ripe, just before they turn red. The peppercorns are left to dry in which they turn dark in colour. Black pepper is the most flavorful of all the peppers varieties.

Black pepper is one of the most common spices used in the world (what recipe doesn’t ask for salt & pepper to taste!) The “spiciness” of black pepper is due to the bioactive compound called piperine. Similar to capsaicin being the bioactive compound found in cayenne pepper.

Black Pepper to Enhance Metabolism

Piperine is an important alkaloid in black pepper and therefore may stimulate the digestive enzymes, boosting the digestive capacity and assist your body to process food easily and quickly.  Piperine helps with secretion of hydrochloric acid, which may help to digest proteins in food. Research has found black pepper may enhance the absorption of essential nutrients (i.e. selenium) and plant compounds (i.e. turmeric and green tea.) Black pepper may also increase to good gut bacteria.  Piperine may enhance metabolic functioning and quell fat accumulation in the body. The outer layer of black pepper contains phytonutrients, which may assist in breaking down fat cells and boost metabolism. Piperine has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Black Pepper as a Boosting Agent

The benefit of black pepper is it assists the body’s ability to absorb curcumin. Curcumin (an active ingredient in turmeric) has poor bioavailability on its own. To have greater absorption of curcumin you need to take it with boosting agents to take advantage of the health benefits. When curcumin is combined with piperine (boosting agent) it has been shown to increase the bioavailability by 2000%! Black pepper enhances the bioavailability of turmeric, which helps prevent the curcumin in turmeric being digested and metabolizing too quickly before it can be properly absorbed. With research showing that black pepper is beneficial for weight loss, skin health, respiratory relief and antibacterial reasons, its main purpose in the TurmeriX® blend is to assist the turmeric.

In our blend of TurmeriX®, we use an 14 additional herbs and spices. 2 very important ingredients are needed for absorption of turmeric; they are black pepper (piperine) and a healthy fat (coconut powder).  Because we use the highest grade of turmeric and have also added the additional ingredients, we know that our product has very high bioavailability whereby one is getting the best absorption.
